Tempe police are investigating the shooting of a tow truck driver early Thursday.
According to Sgt. Cindy Davies, Tempe police spokeswoman, the victim was in surgery as of 7:30 a.m.
She said police got the call from the driver’s dispatcher, who the man had called to report he was shot.
The incident occurred around 6 a.m.
The tow truck with a vehicle loaded on it was parked behind a shopping center on the southeast corner of Rural and Broadway roads.
Around the corner about 75 yards from tow truck was trash left behind by paramedics who treated the man in front of a sandwich shop.
Kurt Powers, the victim’s work partner, said the man was on his way to the state Department of Public Safety impound lot when he was shot.
Powers said he didn’t know why the man, who worked for Unique Heavy Recovery, had stopped.
Davies said investigators aren’t even sure where the shooting took place.
