The salaries of top coaches at Arizona's two largest universities have set off alarm bells with the Arizona Board of Regents.
The regents oversee both Arizona State University and the University of Arizona. They have launched a review of university athletics to examine the growth in coaching salaries, how sports programs are funded and whether opportunities for male and female athletes are more equal.
The regents expect to finish their analysis and make recommendations next summer.
At a time when Arizona's universities have frozen pay and cut programs and jobs, the salaries of top coaches increased.
Coaching salaries are funded out of ticket proceeds and private donations, but critics say the fact that football and men's basketball programs pay for themselves doesn't justify excessive salaries.
