After months of work, the Arizona Department of Transportation this weekend finally completed its addition of new carpool lanes to Loop 101 in the Chandler and Tempe area.
Crews finished lane striping and removed the last of the construction barricades to open the northbound Loop 101 carpool lane from U.S. 60 south to Loop 202.
The opening of the new northbound high-occupancy vehicle lane, combined with last week's opening of the southbound lane in the same area, completes a recent series of projects to add more than 35 miles of carpool lanes along Loop 101 and state Route 51.
Carpool lanes are limited to vehicles carrying at least two people, in addition to motorcycles and buses, during the weekday rush hours of 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
