A bat that tested positive for rabies was found on the grounds of Higley High School on Friday.

The Maricopa County Department of Public Health is seeking any students who “touched the bat or had contact with saliva on the plastic bag that contained the bat.”

Any parent who believes their child may have touched the bat, or saw another child touch the bat, is asked to call the department “immediately” for instructions and information on a possible rabies vaccination.

“Please keep in mind that not every child that touches a bat will need to be vaccinated, which is why public health officials will need to assess their risk by interviewing the child,” wrote Tammy Sylvester, a nurse epidemiologist.

To set up an interview, call (602) 506-6767 during regular business hours, or (602) 747-7111 after hours or on the weekend.
