Scottsdale and Phoenix fire crews battled an extensive blaze for more than three hours Monday afternoon on the roof of a two-story home in north Scottsdale.

The fire broke out at 12:35 p.m. as workers were installing a new roof on a home in a gated community in the 10800 block of East Happy Valley Road, said Tiffani Nichols, spokeswoman for the Scottsdale Fire Department.

The upscale home is on the south side of Happy Valley Road near the Troon Golf Course, and early fire investigators' reports show the cause of the blaze was likely accidental, Nichols said.

Roofing workers were using a torch to melt the seams on the roof, and when they looked back, it was on fire, Nichols said.

Workers' attempts to put the fire out with an extinguisher were unsuccessful and they soon called 911.

"We're not sure if the home will be a complete loss, but the damage definitely was extensive," Nichols said. "The family won't be staying there tonight."

Firefighters arrived six minutes after the call came in, she said, but the amount of time the roofers took to try to put the fire out on their own is unknown.

At least 25 firefighters battled the blaze and were forced to go on the defensive to keep it from spreading, Nichols said.

The fire spread to the attic of the home, and firefighters had to wait until the fire burned through the roof before they started spraying water over the flames, she said.

The home's owners, a husband and wife, were inside the structure when the fire started, but got out safely, Nichols said.

No injuries were reported and firefighters were able to successfully retrieve electronics equipment from the house so it was not destroyed, she said.
