Authorities have arrested a 19-year-old man accused of shooting another teen in the face and the back, court records say. The teen is still paralyzed.

Jesus Trini Lopez Jr. was booked into jail Tuesday night on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder and assisting in a criminal gang. Lopez’ bond is set at $270,000.

Lopez fled after the Feb. 4 shooting at a Mesa party where rival gangs had gathered, and police couldn’t interview the victim who was on a respirator, according to a North Mesa Justice Court document.

When the 18-year-old was able to talk, he identified Lopez by name and through a photograph as the shooter.

The gangs were at an apartment at 57 N. Horne after midnight, when one gang member began insulting other gang members and yelling out his own gang name, the document says.

A verbal exchange turned into a physical fight involving broken beer bottles. The 18-year-old, who isn’t a documented gang member but attended with gang members, was shot from behind. The bullet hit his spine.

After he fell to the floor, people began to flee. The victim told police Lopez then stood over him and shot him one more time in the face, the court document says.

Lopez admitted to police that he was at the party but said he was outside during the shooting.
