Marlee shook hands and barked with her human “sister” Ally on Tuesday. As the 8-year-old girl and toy poodle played, the Wall family looked over on a new and much anticipated Gilbert dog park from their front porch.
Cosmo Dog Park, opening Saturday evening, east of Greenfield Road on Ray Road near the Santan Freeway, is expected to attract dozens to hundreds of pooches.
“I think they did a good job with the landscaping, and the bike path,” said Dena Wall. Despite two years of noise and construction, the Walls are now excited to see the park open, she said.
On Saturday, dogs are invited for a variety of contests from bikini and beauty to Paris Hilton and Charles Bronson look-alikes.
Dogs and their owners can also pose in cardboard cutouts of K9 officers and their dogs — sticking their heads through holes to appear as the K9 team.
There will be canine demonstrations and pet giveaways. Extra parking will be available west of the park.
“This place is going to be teeming with hounds,” said town spokesman Greg Svelund.
A statue of Cosmo, the town’s first K9 dog, is on display, as well as 1,100 dog bricks engraved with messages. Another 3,000 will be sold beginning Saturday.
“There’s just been a really incredible amount of support from the animal or dog community,” Svelund said.
