More violent crimes and property crimes were reported at Arizona State University last year than any other college campus in the country, according to 2003 FBI crime statistics.

The number of reported violent crimes at ASU, which includes rape, robbery and aggravated assault, increased by four last year to 38 reports, according to the FBI 2003 Uniform Crime Report.

The number of reported property crimes also beat out all other university and college campuses with 1,437 reports, which includes burglaries, thefts and vehicle thefts.

At ASU, the fifth-largest university in the country with 45,693 students, according to the report, one crime was reported for every 1,200 students. Even though ASU’s numbers are high, other schools showed much higher crime rates, such as the University of Medicine and Dentistry, Newark, N.J., where one crime was reported for every 133 students.

San Diego State University beat out ASU in the number of reported vehicle thefts with 160.

ASU officials attribute the high numbers to the growth of the campus and the number of sports and entertainment events open to the public.

"We have an increase in the number of students, and more buildings being built means more people are needed for patrols," said Manny Romero, an ASU spokesman. "ASU recognizes the fact that we do need more resources and assistance in keeping campus safe," he said. "We know this is something that is going to continue to be an issue as the campus continues to grow, and we will try our best to meet those needs."

ASU Department of Public Safety recently received additional funding to hire more officers. The department has 65 sworn officers on campus; many patrol on 12-hour shifts.
