Mesa police are looking for a man who they said robbed a Valero gas station on Sunday and attempted to rob another one less than three hours later.

The first robbery happened about 5 p.m. at the Valero at 5205 E. McKellips Road; the second one happened at 1959 E. Broadway less than three hours later, police said.

The man was described as white, about 20 years old, 5 feet 9 inches tall and 150 pounds. In the first robbery, he was dressed in all black, wore sunglasses and a black beanie, and took an undisclosed amount of cash. In the second robbery, he fit the same physical description but was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, and the store clerk refused to give him any money.

The man did not display a handgun but simulated that he had one and placed his hand in his pocket, police said.
