Banner Health broke ground Wednesday on the first phase of its newest hospital — Banner Gateway Medical Center in Gilbert. At the southwest corner of U.S. 60 and Higley Road, the 165-bed hospital is scheduled to open in fall 2007. "Banner Gateway Medical Center represents a $189 million investment in medical excellence in the East Valley," said Becky Kuhn, the hospital’s chief executive.
"Combined with Banner’s existing medical centers, it will create a comprehensive network of health care services for East Valley residents."
Kuhn said the layout of the center incorporates the latest concepts in hospital design with in-room Internet access, room service for patients and families and other amenities. Other technologies will be computerized medical records and medication orders and remote access for physicians to receive up-to-the-minute patient information.
The 60-acre site has room for the center to triple in size with two additional patient towers and support services. Those facilities will be built as the population grows and there’s a need for more beds, said Susan Gordon, spokeswoman for the medical center.
The Gilbert center is the latest project in a hospital construction boom under way in the rapidly growing East Valley.
Seven medical centers are scheduled for completion by the end of 2007, including Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, scheduled to open in June by Catholic Healthcare West at Val Vista Road south of Pecos Road; Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak, expected to open in fall 2007 east of Thompson Peak Parkway and Scottsdale Road; Mountain Vista Medical Center, a $160 million-$175 million hospital by IASIS Healthcare Corp. opening in 2007 at Crismon and Southern Avenue in east Mesa; and two new hospitals in Queen Creek planned by Banner and Catholic Healthcare West.
Phoenix-based Banner already operates three medical complexes in Mesa, but one of those — Banner Mesa Medical Center at Brown Road and Country Club Drive — will be closed when the Gilbert hospital opens.
