A father of three was killed early Sunday in an attempted robbery at an Ahwatukee Foothills 24-hour convenience store.

Marvin Walters, 38, a manager-intraining filling in on the night shift, was shot while trying to wrestle a gun from a robber at the Water and Ice store, 4601 E. Chandler Blvd. in Phoenix, just after midnight Saturday, said Phoenix police Sgt. Lauri Williams.

The same man robbed Classic Care Car Mart at 56th Street and Ray Road in Tempe about 15 minutes earlier, Williams said. That clerk, who was ushered into a back office, feared for his life and ran out of the store.

In a surveillance video, Walters is seen stocking a refrigerator when a man points a gun at him and motions to the cash register. When the robber turns, Walters tries to grab the gun, they struggle and Walters is shot in the head.

The robber is described as a 20- to 27-year-old Hispanic male, 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 180 to 200 pounds, with a muscular build, brown eyes, a very light moustache, a shaved head, and a tattoo of numbers on the side of his neck.

He was wearing a black T-shirt, dark pants and gloves, and a white Arizona Cardinals baseball hat.

Police ask anyone with information to call (602) 262-6141, or Silent Witness, (480) 948-6377.
