An elderly Cave Creek man was mauled by a buffalo Monday as he was attempting to ride it.

The 75-year-old man sustained non-life threatening injuries but was flown to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborne for treatment, said John Kraetz, Rural/Metro district chief.

The man owned two of the animals. “He had one saddled and apparently got bucked off and mauled by the buffalo,” Kraetz said.

The incident happened at 5632 E. Yucca Road.

Kraetz said it’s the first buffalo-related injury to which he’s had to respond.

“People do have buffalo on their property, but it’s pretty darn uncommon,” he said.
