A 22-year-old man struck and killed two people with his vehicle early Saturday after running a red light while racing another car, Phoenix police said.
Phoenix Police spokesman Tommy Thompson said driver Francisco Javier Sanchez-Beltran was racing another vehicle down 35th Avenue at 1:40 a.m. when he failed to stop at a red light on Thunderbird Road. Sanchez-Beltran collided with the victim's vehicle, Thompson said, killing a male and a female inside.
Sanchez-Beltran was booked into jail on two counts of manslaughter and one count of endangerment due to having another person in his vehicle during the accident.
The identities of the victims and Sanchez-Beltran’s passenger have not been released and police are still investigating the incident, Thompson said.
Police said they are searching for the driver Sanchez-Beltran was racing, who they believe was driving a silver or gray Acura Integra.
