SPRINGERVILLE - A federal official says two people are dead in the crash of a small plane that had just taken off from an airport in eastern Arizona.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the single-engine Piper Cherokee took off from the airport in Springerville at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The plane crashed and burned about three miles south of the airport, and both people on board died. Gregor says there is no control tower at the airport, and the pilot wasn't talking to air traffic controllers. The FAA isn't aware of a flight plan being filed.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
