Gas prices are at a 17-month high, according to AAA Arizona.

The automobile club said this week prices increased for the eigth straight week. In the East Valley, drivers are paying $2.88 for a gallon for regular unleaded, an increase or nearly 3 cents from the week before.

Statewide, motorists are currently paying $2.89 a gallon, an increase of nearly 2 cents from last week, AAA said. The national average remains relatively unchanged from last week at $2.86 per gallon.

“Although Arizona’s fuel average continues to edge upward, the momentum behind recent prices swings has slowed,” said Linda Gorman AAA Arizona public affairs director Linda Gorman. “While $3 per gallon remains a relative certainty here in the state, it is unlikely that prices will go much over that threshold, barring unforeseen circumstance.”

According to AAA, the Energy Information Administration recently released its Short-Term Energy and Summer Fuels Outlook, in which it forecasts retail fuel prices to exceed $3 per gallon during the summer driving season. The $3 mark has already hit in six states, AAA said.

In Arizona, Tucson drivers are paying the state’s lowest fuel price with an average of $2.79, while Flagstaff motorists are paying the state’s highest fuel price with an average of $2.99 per gallon.
