Following the knife attacks of two people inside a Mesa shopping mall last week, prosecutors announced Friday that they had charged a 25-year-old man with murder, attempted murder and assault in the incident.
If found guilty of the murder charge, former Mesa gang member Bernard Allen could face the death penalty. Police have said the suspect has a history of mental illness.
The attacks, which took place last Sunday and Monday, seriously injured 25-year-old Lathaniel Brown and killed 31-year-old Issurah Jackson.
The first attack was inside a Macy’s department store and the second was the next day inside a food court bathroom.
In court documents, police said Allen confessed to the attacks and told officers he believed the men were “disrespecting” him.
Allen has a history of mental illness and was previously diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, which can cause patients to hear voices and see things that aren’t there.
Police don’t yet know if the illness was related to the attacks.
