Copper Ridge School students could be wearing plaid skirts and collared shirts next year.

The Scottsdale Unified School District’s governing board is getting its first look tonight at a proposal that would make the kindergarten through eighth-grade campus the second in the district with uniforms.

The biggest reasons for the uniform proposal are to get kids more focused on learning than on brand-name clothing, and to make it a little easier to keep track of who should be on campus, said Darla Helms, a parent on the committee that developed the proposal.

“If someone wanders off, they stand out a little bit more. And if someone wanders on, they stand out a little bit more,” she said.

The Copper Ridge uniforms are based on the dress currently worn at Cheyenne Traditional School, but would have a few more options.

Students would have the choice of a white, light blue, yellow or black shirt, said Ildiko Laczko-Kerr, executive director of curriculum, instruction and assessment for the district.

Bottoms must be khaki, navy, black or tan, although girls may wear plaid skirts or jumpers keeping with the color scheme, Laczko-Kerr said.

Families would be able to opt out of the uniform, so the committee that developed the proposal put in options to increase student buy-in, Helm said. Unlike Cheyenne, things such as open-toed shoes and sport shorts would be allowed.

“We basically tried to make it unique enough where we would not look like a parochial school — flexible enough to get the kids interested,” she said.

Most families support uniforms, according to a survey the school sent to 744 families in the fall. Of the 454 respondents, 70 percent said they wanted uniforms, and 7 percent indicated they had no preference, Helm said.

The board will vote on the proposal June 5.
