Police are searching for a man who abducted a 20-year-old woman off a Mesa sidewalk Wednesday, drove her to Maricopa and sexually assaulted her in a secluded desert area.

He is described as Spanish-speaking, 18 to 25 years old, about 5 feet 11 inches, 200 pounds and heavy with short black hair.

The abduction occurred about 5:30 a.m. as the woman was walking in the area of 300 S. Williams, near Broadway and Gilbert roads.

Police said the man pulled up in a green 4-door sedan and asked the woman if she needed a ride. He then grabbed her and forced her into his car. The man threatened to kill the woman if she told anyone she had been attacked.

The abductor left the woman in the desert and fled the area. Police said she made contact with someone near Maricopa and they called police.

Police ask anyone with information to call Silent Witness at (480) 948-6377 or Mesa police at (480) 644-2211 or if anyone sees the suspect or his car to call 911.
