A 31-year-old man is in jail on suspicion of first-degree murder after police found him hiding in a Phoenix home where a man was found dead.

According to Sgt. Tommy Thompson, Phoenix police spokesman, a 911 dispatcher got a call at 12:38 a.m. and heard sounds but no caller was talking.

Police went to the home where the call came from in the 6900 block of East Wethersfield, which is in the vicinity of Cactus and Scottsdale roads.

They could see a person walking around inside, but no one would answer the door, Thompson said.

Officers found a carport door forced open so they went inside and found a 51-year-old man “who had been murdered,” according to Thompson.

The officers found Paul Douglas Wegele hiding in the bedroom of the house.

He said Wegele and the victim knew each other.
