A nine-year veteran of the Chandler Police Department was injured on his way to an emergency call Tuesday when his motorcycle collided with a Hummer sport utility vehicle, police said.

Officer Scott Pennell was taken to a hospital for injuries first thought to be a broken leg, said Detective David Ramer, police spokesman. More than an hour after the 3:30 p.m. crash at Arizona Avenue and Elgin Street, investigators were working to figure out how the incident happened.

The officer’s injuries turned out to be minor, and he was expected to be released Tuesday night, Ramer said.

“He’s doing fine.”
