SEDONA, Ariz. - Authorities say two people are dead and another seriously injured after a small plane crashed Thursday afternoon a few miles from the Sedona Airport.
Officials with the Sedona Fire District say one of the plane's occupants was able to get out of the single-engine Piper Cherokee.
That person was airlifted by a state Department of Public Safety helicopter to Flagstaff Medical Center with serious injuries.
It was not immediately known where the plane was coming from or who owned it.
The identities, genders and hometowns of the three people aboard were not immediately released.
Television images showed images of heavy smoke coming from the fiery crash, which occurred about 4 p.m. east of Sedona between the city and Interstate 17 and a few miles south of popular and rugged Schnebly Hill Road.
