A serious injury collision shut down eastbound traffic at McDowell Road and 68th Street in Scottsdale and sent an elderly driver and passenger to the hospital.

The intersection has been cleared and it was re-opened at 1:15 p.m.

Scottsdale police say a sedan traveling east on McDowell Road collided with the rear of an 18-wheeler car hauler that was stopped in the roadway unloading cars.

Police said both an elderly female driver and elderly male passenger were transported to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn, with the man having life-threatening injuries. The sedan climbed the ramp of the car hauler and came to rest hanging halfway off the ramp.
