The Arizona Department of Transportation is cautioning motorists to prepare for lane restrictions on Interstate 17 near Black Canyon City.

A resurfacing and slope improvement project will require southbound I-17 to be narrowed to one lane along a five-mile stretch south of Sunset Point from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday nights this week.

This first phase of work will continue from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights for approximately five weeks, starting June 1.

ADOT said additional lane restrictions will be needed until the entire project is finished by early next year.

Because of the steep grade within the work zone, drivers of large trucks will be required to stop along the frontage road at the Sunset Point Rest Area for a brake check. As an added safety measure to control traffic speeds, pilot cars will be used to lead groups of vehicles down the hill south of Sunset Point.
