Former Republic sportswriter Bob Eger dies

Arizona State University baseball analyst and former Arizona Republic sportswriter Bob Eger died unexpectedly Tuesday of an apparent heart attack. He was 66.

A Yuma native, Eger earned a mass communications degree in 1964 from Arizona State, where he served as sports editor of the State Press. He covered sports for The Associated Press before joining the Republic in 1966. He spent 30 years at the newspaper, most of which was spent covering Sun Devil athletics.

Eger was a seven-time winner of the Arizona Sportswriter of the Year award. In 2001, he authored a 300-page book entitled “Maroon & Gold, a History of Sun Devil Athletics.”
