One year of the double-elimination format is all it took to convince me that it's the way to go when determining a state baseball or softball champion.

Class 5A embarked on that format last season and the results were exciting, particularly in softball where Mesa Red Mountain battled back from a second-game loss to win the 5A-I title with six consecutive wins.

In baseball, Phoenix Brophy took the 5A-I crown without losing a game (5-0) . It will always be tougher in baseball to battle back from an early loss unless your pitching staff is deep (several teams this year have deep staffs ). But one-and-done in a sport where a bad hop or check swing single turns the tide is too heavy a price to pay for 16 teams who have scuffled all year to win a state title.
