Fresh & Easy grocery stores on Wednesday will open the doors to one of its neighborhood-centric markets near Greenfield and Warner roads in Gilbert.
The retailer, a subsidiary of the United Kingdom’s No. 1 grocery chain, Tesco, is inviting nearby residents to the store’s grand opening at 9:45 a.m. It is at 858 S. Greenfield Road.
They’ll be welcomed with free canvass bags and special discounts throughout the store.
The stores — about the size of two Circle K convenience stores — are designed around the concept of offering quick in-and-out visits for small amounts of groceries and healthy ready-to-eat food.
The chain offers a range of private label brands as well as company brands.
The store is inside Warner Greenfield Square — a new, mostly vacant shopping center near several large housing developments, including Finley Farms, Cottonwood Crossing and Greenfield Lakes.
The company already has three stores in Gilbert, but officials say they are in the midst of a Valleywide expansion.
“There are more in the pipeline that aren’t announced just yet,” said Brendan Wonnacott, a Fresh & Easy spokesman.
The Greenfield and Warner store will be the company’s 15th location in the Valley, he said. Another six stores have been announced.
The company recently saw new competition with the unveiling of Wal-Mart’s new Marketside grocery stores.
The Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer has only opened four stores in the East Valley to test shoppers’ reception to the small-scale, convenience-based market late last year.
