An 82-year-old woman visiting from Colorado died Wednesday morning after she stepped off the sidewalk to cross Granite Reef Road near Vista Drive and was struck by a car, police said.
Scottsdale police Sgt. Mark Clark said a man driving a white Honda Accord accidentally hit her as he was heading south.
“He didn’t have any time to react or brake,” Clark said.
An eyewitness, Angie Valenzuela, said she was on her way to a meeting when she saw the car hit the elderly woman.
“It was the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” Valenzuela said.
“He was very upset, very remorseful, very much in shock,” she said.
Police said the elderly woman was out for a walk when she was hit.
Valenzuela said that “a man came across the street asking if we had seen his wife” moments after the accident.
Clark said the woman’s husband was taken to the hospital with chest pain.
He also said the Scottsdale Police Department does not plan to ask the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office to file any charges.
“There were no signs of impairment,” said Clark.
The woman’s name was not immediately released.
It’s the second fatality in a week involving a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in a Scottsdale intersection.
A 34-year-old woman was killed the morning of Oct. 31, when a tractor-trailer made a wide right turn at Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and Scottsdale Road and struck her in the crosswalk.
