Several officers surrounded the house at 818 E. Juanita Ave., near Lindsay Road and Houston Avenue, after a chase that began about 11:30 a.m.

Police said the man was driving recklessly on U.S. 60 and crashed his Mercedes sport utility vehicle into the back of another car.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety took the initial call. But after the man exited the highway, Gilbert officers continued after him.

The man fled down Baseline Road and turned onto Lindsay Road. Police said that he was driving more than 100 mph.

He forced one Gilbert police officer off the road at the corner of Lindsay Road and Melody Drive, causing the officer to smash into a block wall. The man also knocked over traffic signs and nearly hit a pedestrian, police said.

The officer wasn’t seriously injured.

The man barricaded himself inside the house, and more than a dozen officers were stationed around the property during the afternoon while waiting for a search warrant.

Police said they were still investigating why the man was fleeing from officers.

The SUV had considerable damage to its front end, and the back bumper had been ripped off.

Police at the scene didn’t release the man’s name.

The man, whose name was not released, was detained late Friday but has not yet been arrested or charged according to spokesperson for Gilbert police, Lt. Shuhandler.
