GOODYEAR - A Goodyear police officer has been shot following an armed burglary at a car wash.

Goodyear police said the officer was shot twice. John Rowan, a spokesman for Goodyear police, said the officer was shot in the chest and in the thigh. The officer was wearing a vest that likely saved his life, Rowan said. The officer was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix and is in stable condition.

Police said the situation began when an armed man stole a tip jar from the car wash. The man fled into a neighborhood. Police set up a perimeter and traced the suspect to a shed. Rowan says as the officer approached the shed, the suspect began shooting, striking the officer. Other officers returned fire, killing the suspect. A police canine was also injured, but is expected to recover.
