The Arizona Humane Society rescued three emaciated dogs and found two more dead at a Phoenix residence on Sunday.
Two additional dogs on the property appeared to be healthy and not in any immediate danger. By law, the AHS is only allowed to take away dogs that are in desperate need of medical attention.
The whereabouts of the dogs’ owner was not known.
According to AHS, the landlord of the property in the 4100 block of North 28th Drive discovered the abandoned dogs after he went inside the house and found they had no food or water.
The landlord told authorities he had not been in contact with the resident for about two weeks.
When emergency animal medical technicians arrived at 2:30 p.m., they discovered two dead dogs, one of which was badly decomposed and appeared to have been deceased for some time. Authorities believe the other died within the past 24 hours
The two surviving adult dogs received a poor prognosis, but the puppy is in better condition. They are being evaluated at the Second Chance Animal Hospital.
