Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire near a metal storage shed at Mesa’s Mountain View High School that damaged sports equipment and caused an estimated $50,000 in damage early Monday.
Fire crews responded to the blaze at the school, 2700 E. Brown Road, about 1:30 a.m. Monday after a neighbor noticed the flames and called 911, according to Kathy Bareiss, a Mesa Unified School District spokeswoman.
A riding lawn mower, a golf cart and a number of wrestling mats and football pads that were outside the metal shed were damaged from the fire, Bareiss said. The shed is not connected to any school buildings.
The fire is not being investigated as an arson at this time and investigators are looking into its cause.
“We have no reason to believe that this is a suspicious fire,” Bareiss said.
