When you are applying for a job, you are usually required to fill out an application. Most employers review your application before they choose to see you.
Usually it forms an important first impression, and can screen you in or out for the interview. To increase your chances for an interview, follow these guidelines.
Be prepared
When going to an interview, bring a completed sample application, in case you are asked to complete an application form on the spot.
Take the application home
If the company permits it, filling out the form at home allows you to complete the form neatly and accurately.
Be neat
Use black ink and print or type the requested information. If you need to correct a mistake, use correction fluid.
Answer all questions completely and accurately
Do not write, “see resume,” unless specifically instructed to do so. Write N/A where not applicable or simply use a dash.
Be positive and truthful
If there is a gap in your work history, explain the work you have been doing, such as going to school or managing a household.
Alert references beforehand
List people who have knowledge of your skills and have agreed to give you a reference. Do not use relatives.
Re-read the application
Check your answers for correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and accuracy.
