The World’s Greatest Classic Car Auction” is being held this week up in Scottsdale. The Barrett-Jackson Car Auction is held every January at Westworld in Scottsdale. This year the event dubbed “the place to see and be seen” is being held January 13-21st . In case you’re new to the Valley or you’ve lived here but never been, On The Road has traveled up the information highway to let you know what The Barrett-Jackson Car Auction is about and just why you may want to attend!
Back in 1960 Tom Barrett was selling his 1939 Cadillac V-16 Town Car when Russ Jackson took interest in the vehicle. Though Russ Jackson never did buy the car, the two struck a friendship that one day would become the Barrett-Jackson Car Auction dynasty. In 1967 the two friends held their first Barrett-Jackson Car Auction as a fundraising event for local charities. In 1972 the two entrepenuers put together their first real auction with classic vehicles they both owned. When John Barrett’s Mercedes 770 Paetheon sold for a staggering $153,000 the sale earned worldwide news interest. Thus was born The Barrett-Jackson Car Auc- tion growing each year from humble beginnings. In 1987 Barrett-Jackson earned $1 million on the sale of one its vehicles. In 1989, the auction was relocated to Westworld and attracted over 50,000 attendees becoming the event to “see and be seen”.
Currently the worldwide event is run by son Craig Jackson.
