The first McDonald's restaurant in the Gila River Indian Community will break ground this morning at the northeast corner of 56th Street and Sundust Road, just east of Interstate 10.

Owners/operators Mike Pegram and Michelle Slayton said they will donate $1,000 to the Gila River Residential Program for Youth to mark the event.

The restaurant, which is expected to open in September, will employ about 50 people and will begin accepting applications in August.

Among attendees at the groundbreaking will be Gila River Lt. Gov. Joseph Manuel, Councilman Jewel Whitman and Councilwoman Rebecca Rowe.
