On The Road travels just south of the East Valley this week for a little motorsport fun with a visit to Chandler’s Firebird International Raceway. In previous On The Road columns we’ve talked to our readers about new cars, trucks, RVs and even motorcycles, dealerships, sales and service. Today we thought we’d take a break from the traffic of everyday life and become spectators for some “off road” fun.
Located at I-10 and Wildhorse Pass exit (just across the street from Gila River Casino) Firebird International Raceway has been hosting on-road and off-road events since its founding in 1983. Sitting on 465 acres and open 365 days a year, Firebird Raceway is an official NHRA certified race track. It hosts such events as The NHRA Nationals, The International Hot Boat Association Lakefest Boat Races every year, and AZ Bike Week. The raceway features a 2.2 mile oval shaped man-made lake, grassy lakeside pavilions, and venues for outdoor road events. Firebird International Raceway hosts over 400,000 spectators and visitors each year to its facility just south of Chandler. Firebird International Raceway also holds events for Indy Car Testing, Tent Sales, and even RV and Boat Shows.
This coming October Firebird Raceway will host the Tire Pro’s Truckin’ 4X4 Nationals. This event includes a show-n-shine, off-road competitions, truck drag racing, monster truck shows, and off-road and on-road manufacturers Ride and Drive. The event draws on average 36,000 spectators. There’s lots to see and do for the on-road, off-road enthusiast at the raceway.
UROC, United Rock Crawling and Off Road Challenge, will host its 2005 Extreme Nationals at Firebird Raceway this weekend, August 26th and 27th. “If you think you know what off-roading is, you haven’t seen anything!” says Jason Slipcheck, Marketing and Media Coordinator for Firebird International Raceway. This two day event draws around 5,000 visitors where spectators are treated to extreme off-road vehicles tackling man made mountains and hills in “rock-crawlers”. These vehicles look like dune buggies on steroids! The UROC event is all part of the “Extreme Nationals” of off-roading hosted by Firebird Raceway. T-shirts, lots of food, refreshments, and souvenirs will be available to visitors at the event.
This is the first year UROC has hosted events here in the valley and hopefully there will be many more to come. Firebird International Raceway has a whole list of events for the upcoming Fall and Winter season that will appeal to automotive enthusiasts across the board.
