East Valley drivers got a bit of a break at the pump this week as average fuel prices dropped 2.8 cents to $3.417.

In the last month, prices in Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, Apache Junction and Tempe have dropped nearly 6 cents.

But AAA Arizona warns that with crude oil spiking above $100 for the first time since May that could change.

The statewide average dropped almost a penny to $3.454 per gallon. Nationally, prices jumped more than 4 cents to $3.518 per gallon.

"Given the recent spike in oil prices, it's only a matter of time before Arizona fuel prices change direction," said Linda Gorman, director of communications and public affairs for AAA Arizona. "This couldn't come at a worse time for drivers, as we are in the peak of the summer travel season."

Tucson and Flagstaff hold the low and high state fuel averages at $3.235 and $3.698 per gallon, respectively. South Carolina and California hold the lowest and highest average prices for the lower 48 states at $3.190 and $3.982 per gallon, respectively.
