Frespa, a new membership- based chain of spas with headquarters in Mesa, will calm our jangled nerves with two locales that open in January in Mesa and Gilbert.

Frespa is a little different from other spas. The facilities are available only to members, who pay monthly dues. The chain also has a no-tipping policy for services. The spas offer about 40 services including manicures and pedicures, waxing, tanning, hairstyling, massage, teeth whitening and laser services.

The Mesa location will be near Falcon Field, just west of Greenfield Road on Presidio Street. The Gilbert location will be on Warner Road, between Lindsay Road and Val Vista Drive.

The company said it also has plans to open three more spas in the East Valley, but doesn't have solid opening dates. Those locations are in Mesa on Longmore across the street from Fiesta Mall; Ahwatukee Foothills on 51st Street, north of Elliot Road; and Chandler at Dobson and Germann roads.

SPORTS GRILL OPENS

Big Daddy's Smokehouse Sports Grill opened at the southwest corner of 40th Street and Chandler Boulevard in Ahwatukee Foothills. But this restaurant isn't for people watching their waistlines. It serves a range of entrees including beef brisket, baby back ribs and smoked chicken wings.

NEW BARNES & NOBLE

Barnes & Noble will open Sunday at SanTan Village at Williams Field Road and Loop 202 in Gilbert. The store will stock about 200,000 products ranging from books and music to DVDs and magazines, and will feature a Starbucks cafe.

ROSS PLANNED FOR TEMPE

A Ross Dress for Less is planned for the northeast corner of Southern Avenue and McClintock Drive in the Bashas' Valley Plaza center in Tempe. The Pleasanton, Calif.-based retailer sells name-brand apparel, accessories and home accessories at 20 percent to 60 percent off regular retail prices.

Virginia Stuart, a company spokeswoman, said the center will open sometime in 2010.
