A major car rental company is offering customers VIP treatment with a new chauffeuring service. For an extra $30 an hour, Avis Rent A Car customers can get picked up at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in a rental car of their choice and shuttled around the Valley by an insured and certified chauffeur. There’s a three-hour minimum.

Phoenix is one of 10 markets nationwide where the New Jersey-based company began providing drivers in partnership with WeDriveU, a chauffeuring service based in San Mateo, Calif.

Officials said the drivers are available with any rental car from a compact to a Hummer H3 sports utility vehicle.

“Every car in our fleet is open to this program, “ said Dennis Moses, the company’s district manager of Sky Harbor operations.

Avis officials said there’s no one particular demographic they’re trying to attract and that it’s ideal for the business or leisure traveler.

“It’s really for both,” said Alice Pereira, a spokeswoman for Avis.

Pereira said the service seemed to be catching on well although wouldn’t say how many reservations they’ve received.

Avis chose Phoenix to launch the program because it’s the third-largest rental market in the country, Moses said.

“A lot of rental transactions come through here. Put it that way,” he said.

Noni Lapusan, a chauffeur with We-DriveU, said he transported the first customer Tuesday from Sky Harbor to Prescott.

“The customer was very satisfied,” he said.

Avis Rent A Car, part of New Jersey-based Avis Budget Group, operates at 2,000 locations in the United States and internationally.
