If your household income is under $50,000, taking the “EZ” path to tax-return preparation could cost you dearly. Mesa United Way invites you to use its free tax service to ensure you get all the tax credits you may be entitled to.

“More people are getting the message that even if you don’t owe any taxes, you still could have a check coming from the government,” said Don Jensen, who coordinates the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program for Mesa United Way. “Many lower income people qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit, and possibly other credits that can put money in their pockets. But you can’t get the credits if you file the short forms.”

Last tax season, Mesa VITA volunteers prepared tax returns for hundreds of people, yielding a total of $3.3 million in refunds. “That’s money they could use to help pay the rent or utility bills, and it’s also a significant sum that helps our local economy,” Jensen said.
