Chandler-based Microchip Technology said Thursday it has acquired R&E International, a privately held developer of integrated circuits used primarily in security and life-safety equipment such as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Microchip Technology circuits also enjoy a strong market position in those detectors, and the acquisition will help the company develop next-generation products, said Rich Simoncic, Microchip vice president.

R&E International is based in Norristown, Pa.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
