Coal is still king in Arizona.

Arizona State University cited energy statistics after Gov. Jan Brewer called Tuesday for Arizona to become a leader in solar and nuclear energy.

Figures show more than 36 percent of the energy generated in Arizona comes from coal.

In addition, the percentage of electric power generated from renewable sources in Arizona has been declining since the peak in 1997.

Solar production lags in the state, which has more than 300 days of sunshine a year.

The figures come from Arizona Indicators, a project of the Morrison Institute for Public Policy.

Arizona Indicators is a central data resource for information on Arizona and its communities, tracking the state's competitive position to help officials and the public make informed decisions.
