CVS/Caremark will close its Phoenix mail-service pharmacy operation on New Year’s Eve, leaving more than 300 jobs in jeopardy. The closing was announced Sept. 28.

The facility is located at the Cotton Center near the Phoenix-Tempe border. CVS/Caremark also has a large work force in Scottsdale that is not affected.

“The decision to consolidate this operation into other existing operations was made after careful consideration and because of changing business demands and integration activities since the CVS and Caremark merger,” said Michael DeAngelis, CVS/Caremark spokesman. “The employees whose positions are affected were informed, and our HR team has been working closely with these employees to place them in other positions.”

The number of laid-off employees will be at least 100 fewer than the 423 indicated in a notification to the Arizona Department of Economic Security because the company has found other jobs for them, he said.

The total number of jobs lost has yet to be determined as CVS/Caremark continues to try to place other employees elsewhere in the company, he said.

“They were notified at the end of September of a Dec. 31 effective date of this operation being closed,” DeAngelis said. “So it’s been a gradual closing for the last three months.”

In instances where other job opportunities are not available, employees will be eligible to receive a transition package, DeAngelis said.
