Walking into Infusionsoft provides a bit of jolt.
For one thing, the lobby of the Gilbert software company has two massage chairs. Employees walk around kicking soccer balls back and forth. There’s a cereal bar in the kitchen, and a basketball hoop and pool table at one end of the office.
And, oh yeah – most of the office sits on an artificial turf football field.
Infusionsoft is not your everyday company, but the Gilbert-based business is one of the more successful sales and marketing software companies in the industry – and one of the most popular to work at, appearing regularly on Valley and national “best places to work” lists.
And it’s growing, too. Consistently adding new clients and employees since its inception in 2004, Infusionsoft has more than 10,000 customers, according to its website.
And the company is growing so much that it is moving at the end of this year to a larger Chandler location being built specifically for them. Yes, the new digs will include a turf football field.
“It’s a good problem to have, growing so quickly that you run out of space,” says Kimberlee Morrison, whose title with the company is “cultural evangelist.”
While the football field existed when the company moved in, some of the other toys and perks “are rewards for a job well done,” says Morrison.
Currently, the company has more than 300 employees. The new space, set to open up at the beginning of next year in the Price Road corridor, could accommodate as many as 1,000, depending on company growth.
When Infusionsoft began, it worked primarily with information marketers and consultants. It now works regularly with local service providers, small business retail and other businesses all across the country.
The company focuses on goals, and rewards success. Each department sets specific goals for the quarter and year. Whether it’s the number of new clients added, or the percentage of clients kept, the company will reward individuals and departments based on their achievements.
If everyone’s goals are achieved, the executive board will brainstorm a new reward for the employees. Last quarter was a catered lunch every Wednesday, paid for by the company.
Sometimes the perks are suggestions from employees. There is a constant communication network in the office known as “the cereal bowl,” where ideas for perks can be posted.
It’s no surprise the business has been voted one of the best places to work for several years by The Phoenix Business Journal. The company also has been featured in national publications such as Forbes, Business Week, Inc. Magazine’s “Inc. 500” and FastCompany.
The company is proud of its culture, and it offers the public monthly tours of its facilities.
“It’s an amazing place to be,” says Bryan Hatch, account manager at Infusionsoft. “It’s totally different; it throws a lot of business up on its head.”
While a lot of people would think an environment with so many toys could be distracting, Hatch has a different way of describing it.
“We work hard, play hard; that’s the best way to put it,” Hatch said.
“It might look like we’re having a lot of fun, and I think it’s because when you hire people for fit, then they sort of can work in this collaborative environment,” Morrison said. “But everyone is working their (tails) off.”
Infusionsoft was created by a couple of entrepreneurs, Clate Mask and Scott Martineau, who wanted to give small business owners the potential to advertise with more impact. At first, it started as email marketing, but eventually the company developed an all-in-one package that covers sales, marketing and social media in one platform.
What makes the best work environment for the business, Hatch said, is “figuring out what needs to happen and then giving us the freedom to work within those problems that we’re trying to solve.”
