Verizon Wireless said Monday it will hire 150 full-time customer service employees in Chandler to serve the company’s growing customer base in the Southwest.
The jobs are in addition to 450 positions filled by Verizon Wireless since the company opened its $20 million regional headquarters and customer service center six months ago. The center is located in leased space at 6955 W. Morelos Place in the Chandler Freeways Business Park.
"The new jobs at the Chandler center are a direct result of Verizon Wireless’ record-breaking growth in 2004 and our customer loyalty performance," said Brian Danfield, director of customer service.
Verizon Wireless added more than 6.3 million net new customers during the year, he said, and overall the Bedminster, N.J.-based company has 43.8 million voice and data customers.
Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone.
The company hopes to fill the 150 Chandler openings in the next few weeks, spokeswoman Jenny Weaver said. The customer service representatives handle incoming calls from customers in the Southwest United States who have questions and requests on such issues as changing billing plans or adding features, she said.
The Chandler center is one of more than 20 customers service centers the company operates nationwide.
The Valley has been a good location to find skilled job candidates because of the large number of call centers in the area, Weaver said.
The hires will bring the number of Verizon Wireless employees working in Arizona to more than 1,600. In addition to the Chandler regional center, the company operates 37 stores and kiosks in the state, including Verizon Wireless stores inside Circuit City outlets.
Verizon Wireless opened the 170,000-square-foot regional headquarters in October when the company consolidated most of its Valley operations. Previously the company had operated a customer service call center in Tempe and a regional headquarters in Ahwatukee Foothills.
The Chandler location has room for growth as the number of customers increases, Weaver said.
The company offers such employee benefits as medical, dental and vision coverage; participation in a 401(k) program; paid training; an annual bonus program for nonsales employees; profit sharing; and an on-site fitness center. The company conducts a six-week training program to prepare new representatives to serve customers.
