With energy prices on the rise, more builders are turning to energy-efficient house designs that are both good for the environment and the wallet.
In June, national builder Shea Homes will host two "eco expos" at developments in the West Valley and Queen Creek to showcase its energy-efficient houses.
The Queen Creek event will take place 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 7 at Shea's Encanterra master-planned community at 1035 E. Combs Road.
The new houses include standard features such as solar attic fans, energy-efficient appliances, motion sensor lighting and insulation from recycled materials.
Potential buyers will be able to tour the houses and talk with people from various construction trades about their roles in creating the environmentally friendly houses. Shea is also giving away a Toyota Prius hybrid car with each "green" home purchased through June 15.

Another active Valley builder was recently recognized for its green building efforts.
Washington-based Chaffey Homes received an award for Single-Family Custom Green Home of the Year. The luxury homebuilder was recognized earlier this month at the National Association of Home Builders' Green Building Conference in New Orleans.
Chaffey entered the Arizona market in 2007, starting up two communities, Tranquil Trail Estates and Almarte, in Carefree.
The builder was one of 17 industry professionals recognized for its environmentally friendly designs and construction practices.
Terra verde offices
Pulte Homes has signed on to become one of the first major tenants in a new, $140 million office complex near Bell Road and Loop 101 in Scottsdale.
The builder has leased more than half of a 173,000-square-foot building - one of three planned for the complex. Called Terra Verde Corporate Campus, the office development will eventually total three buildings with roughly 500,000 square feet of space.
Work began on the project's first phase in the fall. Pulte currently has offices in Scottsdale's Raintree Corporate Center off Pima Road but plans to move in fall 2009.
Sage luxury homes
Valley home builder Sage Luxury Homes, which builds custom homes in Arcadia, recently opened offices in Scottsdale. The move is part of the company's plans to better serve clients. The new offices are at 6900 E. Camelback Road, Suite 101.
