A virtual one-stop shop, catering to the most common medical needs under one roof; the most up-to-date technology and imaging on the premises — geared so patients don’t have to wait; an office with early appointments that stays open late and on Saturdays, and even has holiday appointments.

It’s not hard to believe for Dr. David Warkentin, founder of Verve Wellness Center in Mesa. That’s exactly how he designed the Verve practice more than 12 years ago, and exactly what he knows led Verve’s customers to vote the facility the winner in four different categories (best doctor, best dentist, best medical center and best new business for Verve’s recently introduced physical therapy arm) earlier this year in East Valley Tribune “Best of East Valley 2013” balloting.

Encompassing chiropractic, dental, oral surgery, physical therapy, massage therapy, internal medicine, pain medicine, radiology, family practice and more, the medical facility aims to put all specialties in one place for patients.

“The patient is always right. Even when they’re wrong, they’re right,” explains Warkentin, Verve Wellness Center’s CEO. “That’s what’s built this practice into what it is today.”

Building this facility — creating a network of specialists, diagnosing hard-to-define ailments and providing an individualized experience — has become his life’s work, something he could never have done in his native Canada, Warkentin said.

“Canada would never let a facility like this happen; it’s too efficient,” he explained. “…In Canada, you’re waiting a year just to get the MRI. Forget the results, you’ll die waiting. So the accessibility to health care here is nice and the accessibility to specialists and imaging here is huge.”

After stops in Seattle, and Atlanta, Warkentin moved to Arizona to open his practice.

“It’s the only place outside of Canada where I feel like I’m home,” he said. “I didn’t feel like that in Seattle, it didn’t feel like that in Atlanta that much.”

And while the summers are hot here, the winters are worth it, he said. And the Phoenix area provides lots of opportunity with some of the best hospitals in the country.

“The people are pretty friendly here. The city is spread out, there’s a diverse population and there’s just a lot of opportunity in Arizona, as long as you’re willing to work for it,” Warkentin said.

For Warkentin, it’s been about more than providing the best doctors and support staff; it’s also important to focus on customer service and, as he puts it, going the extra mile for patients when they need it most.

“Look at these kids, there are no screaming kids in our waiting rooms,” Warkentin joked while walking by a room filled with video games and TVs.

Stocked with coffee, tea and hot chocolate, fresh fruit and other food, the waiting room is meant to be actually enjoyable, he said.

“The whole building, we spent an extra $80,000 just to make sure that we were 100 percent (disability) 88-compliant,” he said. “And if they’re on a scooter or something, the hallways are wide enough for them to navigate.”

But it’s comfort for all patients that Verve strives for, Warkentin said.

“If you take Verve and the Four Seasons and merge them,” he said of the ultimate goal. “Imagine the great doctors at the Mayo Clinic, but have the feeling like you’re at the Four Seasons instead of a private practice doctor’s office.”
