There have been months of talks between Tempe-based US Airways and Dallas-based American Airlines, but now there are reports the two airlines are in the final stages of negotiating a merger.
According to Reuters, the two airlines could reach a deal in as little as two weeks. The American Airlines’ board reportedly plans to meet on Monday and Tuesday to discuss the latest developments in their negotiations.
At this point, negotiations have come down to how much equity the combined company would split between shareholders, and more importantly, who would run the merged airline.
If American and US Airways become one airline, the merged company would be a strong competitor against United-Continental.
According to reports, an American-US Airways merged company would have made $38.09 billion in 2012. United Continental had revenue of $37.15 billion in 2012.
