The Bottom Line: Downtown Mesa Sheraton to be Marriott in April

The general manager of the Sheraton Phoenix East told the Mesa City Council on Thursday morning that the hotel will change its name to Marriott in early April.

Reached later in the day, Carlton Warner said he couldn’t confirm a date because of an agreement the company has with Sheraton.

In August, Arlington, Va.-based Meristar Hospitality Corp. was slated to sell the 273-room hotel at 200 N. Centennial Way to San Diego, Calif.-based Pacifica Host Hotels for an undisclosed amount of money. At the time, neither side would confirm a sale was expected, but the hotel’s general manager took over a Scottsdale resort.

The Sheraton is one of Mesa’s only two major fullservice hotels.

Warner told the City Council the hotel is being renovated. The top three floors are nearly done, four others are being worked on, and renovations will begin soon on the public spaces on the bottom floor, he said.

There’s also plans to open a Starbucks Coffee in the lobby. While the chain seems to be in nearly every strip mall, the hotel will be the first Starbucks in downtown Mesa.


You ain’t nothing but an action figure.

Tempe-based McFarlane Toys has a deal with Elvis Presley Enterprises to make The King into a super stage action figure.

McFarlane’s toy will based on Presley’s famous ’68 comeback special, filmed for television in Burbank, Calif. in June and aired Dec. 3. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the release of Presley’s first record.

The little Elvis will be dressed in his legendary black leather costume, and includes a custom stage diorama base complete with chair, guitar, microphone with stand and backdrop based on the informal in-the-round concert stage. The figure’s packaging includes the official 50th Anniversary original artwork from Elvis Presley Enterprises.

The figure will be available at most music and specialty retailers, as well as select toy stores in May, with a retail price range of $12 to $15. Todd McFarlane is the creator of Spawn and has had several successful music lines.


Barrett-Jackson is clamping down on people who don’t want to pay to see their pretty cars.

Last year six people were caught with fake entry tickets. The adult entry fee is $20 or $25 per day or $80 for a fourday pass. The auction added holograms and numbers to this year’s tickets.

"You know you’ve made it when they knock you off," auction president Craig Jackson said. Barrett-Jackson merchandise is hot too. The auction’s Matchbox cars have been on the market for a couple years thanks to a partnership with Mattel. A third in the series is now available.

New this year is the limitededition Barrett-Jackson watch. They were designed by Jackson and feature a face that resembles classic car dashes surrounded by a steering wheel. Cost: $4,250, but a portion of the profits go to Phoenix Suns Charities.
