Downloading music from cyberspace is easier thanks to a new development by Limelight Networks, a Tempebased company that makes systems used by legitimate online music distributors.
The company has developed and deployed technology that allows online music fans to capture an unlimited number of songs with a single mouse click instead of the multiple clicks usually required for a single song.
Called BulkGet, the system lets online music retailers offer consumers fast access to complete CDs and song tracks, said Nathan Raciborski, the inventor and chief technology architect for Limelight.
"Traditionally, online music consumers could only download one object or song at a time," he said, adding that the BulkGet system lets them download "as many songs as they want with a minimal number of mouse clicks."
The feature has been available at BuyMusic.com since August, and it has been adopted this year by Liquid Digital Media, a provider of services to online retailers such as Wal-Mart, and Puretracks, a Canadian online music retailer.
In addition, BulkGet optimizes downloads based on a user’s connection speed and contains a "resume" feature that captures remaining content should an Internet connection be lost in the middle of a download.
Other BulkGet-types of tools are available for computer users, but they require downloading special software, said Limelight Vice President David Rice. With BulkGet, the system resides with the online retailer, and the customer doesn’t need capabilities beyond the Windows operating system and a connection to the Internet, he said.
"It’s clean and stand-alone," he said. "You use it to get the content, and then it’s gone."
Limelight representatives believe BulkGet also will eventually be used to download multiple episodes of video games, movies and online shows, Rice said.
"It’s an extension of the services we are already offering," he said.
