Valley small-business owners will get to ask questions and learn from one of the nation’s leading experts on small-business issues on Tuesday at a free breakfast and presentation.

The Phoenix Business Journal and Sprint are sponsoring the event at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa, 2400 E. Missouri Ave., Phoenix. Registration begins at 7:15 a.m. and the program runs from 8 to 10 a.m. Although the event is free, participants are encouraged to make reservations because space is limited.

Jane Applegate’s presentation in Phoenix is one of 12 stops across the nation. She recently wrote a book called "The Entrepreneur’s Desk Reference, Authoritative Information, Ideas and Solutions for Your Small Business." Each program participant will receive a free copy of the book and is encouraged to bring their small-business questions and concerns for Applegate to address.

Her book, which she’ll discuss in her presentation, offers an A-to-Z guide on personnel issues, marketing, growth, legal issues and a host of other topics.

Each entry offers a definition, suggestions on how to handle the situation and recommended resources and reading.

She’ll also discuss the importance of communication in the workplace, with customers and in the industry.

"Small businesses are an essential part of the local economy in (the Valley)," Applegate said.

Small businesses, defined as 100 or fewer employees, represent about 98 percent of small businesses in Arizona. Applegate estimates selfemployed businesses in Arizona increased by 9.3 percent in 2001.

She owns a multimedia and production company called The Applegate Group in Pelham, N.Y. She has founded three small businesses, written four books on small business and is the small business spokeswoman for Sprint. Before she was an entrepreneur, she was a syndicated columnist and small business editor of the Los Angeles Times and CNN Financial News.
